Dialysis

What is a dialysis?

Dialysis does what the kidneys do when the kidney no longer can do its job. Dialysis filters the blood and removes waste and extra fluid.

Types of dialysis
  • Hemodialysis
  • Peritoneal dialysis

Hemodialysis

How does it work?
  • Blood is filtered through a dialysis machine.
  • The machine is connected to the blood vessels.
  • Blood goes into the machine, gets filtered, then filtered blood is returned to the body.

Peritoneal Dialysis

How does it work?
  • Blood is filtered inside the body. The lining inside the abdomen (belly) acts as a natural filter.
  • A cleansing dialysis fluid goes into the abdomen.
  • Waste and extra fluid is brought out of the blood and into the cleansing dialysis fluid.
  • The fluid then leaves the body.
